This unique shirt draws inspiration from early 20th-century natural history lithographs, echoing the artistry of John James Audubon. Like those classic works, the design blends scientific accuracy with timeless art to celebrate the richness of the natural world.
The artwork showcases nine U.S. firefly species:
- Photuris pyralis — the familiar “Big Dipper” firefly
- Photinus carolinus — the famous synchronous firefly of the Smoky Mountains
- Photuris frontalis — the dazzling “Snappy Syncs”
- Photuris versicolor — a complex of Photuris species found across the U.S.
- Lucidota atra — the diurnal “Woodland Lucy”
- Phausis reticulata — the mysterious “Blue Ghost” firefly
- Pollaclasis bifaria — a curious rarity with odd antennae
- Pleotomus pallens — which uses pheromones to find a mate
- Pyractomena borealis — among the first to emerge each spring
Beyond fireflies, the design features native plants and habitat elements vital to their survival: Common Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis), Milkweed (Asclepias sp.), Columbine (Aquilegia), ferns, grasses, and leaf litter — all essential to healthy firefly ecosystems. On this Ivory edition, those plants are outlined in black so each one stands out sharply against the light cotton. It even includes glow worms such as glowing firefly larvae and larviform females, plus a curious easter egg: the Jack O’Lantern mushroom (Omphalotus sp.), a bioluminescent fungus that glows faintly green at night.
The front of the shirt carries a left chest logo in black with the words “Fireflies of the United States” and a firefly perched above.
